Security Camera System: Complete Wiring Guide
Bill of materials
Modern IP camera systems use Power over Ethernet (POE) - one Cat6 cable carries both data and power to each camera. The NVR/POE switch needs a standard 120V outlet. Camera cables are NEC Class 2 low-voltage (Article 725), which means no electrician license required in most states, no conduit required, and you can run cables through walls freely.
POE cameras are low-voltage Class 2 per NEC Article 725. Use outdoor-rated Cat6 (CMX or direct burial) for exterior runs. Keep low-voltage cables 12 inches from line-voltage wiring per 725.136.

Installation notes
GFCI is not specifically required for this application by NEC, though local amendments may differ. Check with your local building department before starting work.
Standard 120V circuits use NM-B cable with 14/2 cable (hot, neutral, ground). For conduit runs, pull individual 14 AWG THHN conductors. All connections must be made in accessible junction boxes.
Run length matters: every foot of wire adds voltage drop, reducing power to your equipment. The table below shows the exact voltage drop at common distances. If your run exceeds the 3% threshold, upsize one gauge.
Voltage drop by distance
Percentage voltage drop at common run lengths. NEC recommends 3% maximum for branch circuits and 5% for combined feeder plus branch.
| Distance | 14 AWG Co | 12 AWG Co |
|---|---|---|
| 25 ft | 0.4% | 0.2% |
| 50 ft | 0.8% | 0.5% |
| 75 ft | 1.2% | 0.7% |
| 100 ft | 1.6% | 1.0% |
| 150 ft | 2.4% | 1.5% |
| 200 ft | 3.1% | 2.0% |

Frequently asked questions
What wire size do I need for security camera system?
Use 14 AWG copper or 14 AWG aluminum on a 15A breaker at 120V. This is based on NEC 2023 Table 310.16 ampacity with 110.14(C) termination limits and 125% continuous load sizing per 210.19(A)(1).
Does security camera system require GFCI?
No. GFCI is not required for this application.
